Nursing orientation consists of a core educational phase, lasting 4 days and includes both a didactic component and hands on skills. This is followed by a specific unit preceptorship of several weeks' duration, which is driven by the orientee's progress. Preceptorship is based on targeted clinical experiences, meeting predetermined objectives, as well as those identified by the orientee. There are regular evaluation meetings with the Education Specialist, Nurse Educator/Preceptor and Unit Manager. Staff members are required to perform their job skills at a safe, competent level before functioning independently.
