Assisted Reproductive Technology

NeighborCare at Greater Baltimore Medical Center (GBMC) is one of the leading dispensers of fertility medications in the Mid-Atlantic area. Since the pharmacy's inception in 1987, assisted reproductive technology (ART), has been a large part of the pharmacy's practice. Area physicians depend on the pharmacists to obtain the myriad of pharmacologic agents needed to treat this special patient population. The pharmacy stocks every imaginable fertility product available: Pergonal, Metrodin, Fertinex, Repronex, Gonal F, Follistim, Progesterone, Hydroxyprogesterone, Chorionic Gonadotropin, and Lupron are just some of the injectable medications always in stock, in sufficient quantities. A large fertility medication is maintained, to assure that your prescription will be filled in full that same day. Partial package quantities, as little as one ampule of medication, are dispensed to minimize waste. Progesterone injection is available in both sesame oil and peanut oil vehicles, for those patients prone to allergic reactions. Compounded progesterone suppositories, vaginal capsules and oral capsules are produced to specific patient needs. Dozens of types of needles and syringes are stocked; pharmacists will help select the most appropriate type to match your injectable prescription. Most all prescription insurance plans are honored.

Home or office delivery is available seven days a week, to a wide delivery area. Three pharmacy drivers assure prompt, courteous service. Further, an in-house pharmacy courier is available to deliver to those patients here at the Greater Baltimore Medical Center campus each weekday.

The pharmacy underwent an extensive expansion and remodeling in the Spring of 1997. A private consultation area was added, to assure discrete patient/pharmacist interaction. Patient education pamphlets and videos are available on many topics and products. Patients are counseled on the correct selection of needles and syringes for particular medications, as well as injection techniques. Storage requirements, reconstitution, and side effect profiles of the injectables are also thoroughly reviewed. Drug interactions, among the medications filled at the pharmacy, are screened by the NeighorCare CareFile Management Information System. Pharmacists are available to answer questions about interactions among other prescription and over-the-counter medications patients may be taking. Pharmacists are always available for patient consultation.

Pharmacy Director, Christopher Kruft, R Ph, has been involved in assisted reproductive technologies since 1988. One of the few pharmacist members of the American Society for Reproductive Medicine, Kruft maintains that ART medications are some of the most scientifically advanced agents in medicine today. As technologies are continually developing, new agents are being introduced at an increasingly rapid rate. Protocols are constantly evolving to utilize the newest agents. NeighborCare at GBMC is committed to making available to physicians and patients the newest, cutting-edge pharmacologic agents, as well as the older, proven medications.

NeighborCare at GBMC has gained a reputation throughout the Mid-Atlantic area as a leader in providing care for the infertile patient population.
