Taking Care of Business - Insurance & Billing

Before surgery, please familiarize yourself with your insurance plan. This will help you understand the Medical Center billing charges. For a routine surgery, you will be called before the day of surgery so that we can establish your billing account. If you have questions about your insurance coverage, please contact a patient financial services representative at  443-849-4411.

If you have health insurance, please bring a copy of your identification card to the Medical Center. We may also need the insurance forms supplied by your employer or the insurance company. Your insurance carrier may have special requirements, such as a second surgical opinion or pre-certification for certain tests or procedures. It is your responsibility to make sure the requirements of the plan have been met.

If you are covered by Medicare or Medicaid, note that the Medicare program specifically excludes payment for certain items and services, such as cosmetic surgery, some oral procedures, personal comfort items, and hearing evaluations. You are also responsible for deductibles and co-payments.

Your surgeon may request that an additional surgeon assist in performing your procedure. This is a normal practice and assures the highest quality of care. Your surgeon may or may not advise you prior to your surgery as to whether or not an assistant will be necessary. GBMC maintains a fully licensed and trained staff of surgeons to assist your surgeon. If an assistant surgeon participates in your care, he or she will bill you separately from the Medical Center and your primary surgeon. Also, please note that certain tests or procedures may require specialized services for diagnosing and interpreting test results. Pathologists, radiologists, cardiologists, anesthesiologists, and other specialists are required to submit separate bills. If you have questions about these bills, please call the number on the statement.

If you have any questions once you are home and receive your bills in the mail, please call Patient Accounting at 443-849-2450.
