Pre-Surgical Testing
Pre-Surgical Testing is required as part of the preparation for a surgical procedure. The tests performed are decided by your physician based on your past medical history, your age, and the surgical procedure you have having performed.

Pre-Surgical Testing may include:

  • history and physical
  • laboratory studies
  • EKG (electrocardiogram)
  • chest x-rays
  • resolution of any problems prior to surgery

NOTE: If Pre-Surgical Testing is completed by your primary care physician, the results must be at the hospital at least 48 hours in advance or your surgery may be canceled.

What should I bring with me to my pre-surgical testing appointment?

  • List of all medicines you are currently taking and their dosages
  • List of all past surliest and medical problems
  • Any questions you may have

Pre-Surgical Testing Time Line

  • Pre-Surgical Testing must be completed prior to surgery
  • The blood tests (lab work) must be completed at least 7-21 days prior to surgery
  • Electrocardiograms (EKGs), and your history and physical cannot be more than 30 days old.
  • Chest x-rays cannot be more than 6 months old.

Pre-Surgical Testing at GBMC

  • Pre-Surgical Testing at GBMC is in the same location as your surgery and is performed by a certified Adult Nurse Practitioner. Allow 1 to 1 1/2 hours for the Pre-Surgical Testing at GBMC
  • Pediatric patients have their Pre-Surgical Testing completed by their pediatrician.
