Attending weight loss surgery support groups can be very beneficial regardless of where patients are in their weight loss program. Facilitated by Melissa Frey, RN, GBMC's Comprehensive Obesity Management (COMP) support groups are FREE and give patients a chance to discuss a number of pre- and post-surgical issues they face.

"This is really their time. Instead of focusing on just one topic, I open the floor up to all of the attendees, giving them the opportunity to ask questions and share stories and advice," says Melissa. In addition, the support groups sometimes feature guest speakers who discuss relevant topics such as exercise and post-bariatric surgery body contouring.
Patients are encouraged to attend the Support Groups as often as possible and to bring friends and family members for additional support. Two groups are held per month: Gastric Band/ Gastric Sleeve Support on the first Tuesday of each month and Gastric Bypass Support on the third Tuesday each month.
"Although we separate the support groups by type of surgery, patients are welcome to attend either one," says Melissa. "Even if you aren't sure yet about which surgery you will be getting, you are welcome to come to either or both support groups," she says, adding that the most important thing is to try to attend one support group per month - no matter what the topic.
Each support group is held in GBMC's Civiletti Conference Center, Physicians Pavilion East, from 6:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. on its respective Tuesday.
No registration is necessary.
