The Thoracic Oncology Center at the Sandra and Malcolm Berman Cancer Institute provides patients with streamlined access to the complete spectrum of diagnostic and treatment options for lung and esophageal cancer. Our Center serves as a single point of contact for patients and referring physicians, and allows for rapid transfer of information between members of the health care team.
Minimally invasive techniques for easier recoveries.
GBMC's Division of Thoracic Surgery provides cutting-edge, multimodality cancer treatment and minimally invasive surgical procedures, as well as expertise in general thoracic surgery. Minimally invasive techniques include Video Assisted Thoracic Surgery (VATS) for diagnostic and therapeutic procedures in the chest, and laparoscopic procedures for treatments of swallowing problems. These techniques generally allow patients to experience:
- Fewer complications
- Less pain
- Less scarring
- Faster recovery.
Customized rehabilitation plans.
Post thoracic surgery pulmonary and physician therapy rehabilitation are also available for patients. A guided, supervised program of exercise and therapy is specifically designed to help patients recover faster.
Clinical Trials bring access to new breakthroughs.
Nearly 85% of all eligible patients participate in our many national multi-center clinical trials. We are active in cooperative group trials as well as industry-sponsored trials examining the diagnosis, treatment, and surveillance of diseases affecting our patients.
