Thyroid Center at GBMC

Our Team

The Thyroid Center at GBMC diagnoses and treats a full range of thyroid disorders from hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism to benign nodules and thyroid cancer. The Center, which features endocrinologists from Bay West Endocrinology Associates as well as several specialists from GBMC serves as a comprehensive resource for patients with thyroid disorders. Thyroid Center patients meet first with one of the board certified members of Bay Endocrine, who will serve as the coordinator for all facets of care related to their thyroid condition. When necessary, patients have ready access to expert thyroid surgeons as well as oncologists from GBMC’s Sandra & Malcolm Berman Cancer Institute. The multidisciplinary team also works closely with GBMC’s Departments of Pathology and Radiology to ensure comprehensive, integrated and coordinated care.


Francis Lee, MD, Medical Director

Dr. Lee, of Bay West Endocrinology Associates, received his bachelor’s degree from Yale University and attended medical school at the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. He completed a general surgery internship and part of a neurosurgery residency at Temple University Hospital before completing his medical residency at Sinai Hospital of Baltimore. Dr. Lee then went on to complete a fellowship in endocrinology at The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. After his fellowship, he practiced Clinical Endocrinology in Bloomington, Indiana for four years, during which time he was also a Clinical Assistant Professor at the Indiana University School of Medicine. Dr. Lee is board-certified in diabetes, endocrinology and metabolism. He has been a principal investigator in clinical diabetes research. He has lectured extensively throughout the nation on topics such as diabetes, lipid disorders, obesity, osteoporosis, women’s health and thyroid disorders. Dr. Lee is particularly interested in thyroid, pituitary and adrenal disorders.


Corina Fratila, MD, Co-Director

Dr. Fratila, of Bay West Endocrinology Associates, attended Carol Davila University of Medicine and Pharmacy in Bucharest, Romania and then completed her medical residency and endocrinology fellowship at Albert Einstein College of Medicine/Jacobi Hospital/Montefiore Medical Center in New York City. Dr Fratila is board-certified in internal medicine and diabetes, endocrinology and metabolism. Her areas of interest include thyroid and pituitary disease, general endocrinology and preventative medicine as it applies to diabetes.


Brian Kaplan, MD, FACS, Surgical Director

Dr. Kaplan attended Cornell University for his undergraduate education and then the University of Virginia School of Medicine, remaining at UVA to complete his residency in otolaryngology - head and neck surgery. He served as Chief Resident before joining Ear, Nose and Throat Associates at GBMC. Dr. Kaplan's past research interests have included hearing loss, chronic sinusitis and facial reconstruction. He currently practices the full scope of ENT, with particular interest in pediatrics, otology and sinus disease.

Dr. Kaplan is board-certified in otolaryngology and is currently the Chairman of the Department of Otolaryngology at GBMC. He is also a fellow of the American College of Surgeons, an Assistant Professor at The Johns Hopkins University Department of Otolaryngology, the Chairman of GBMC’s Institutional Graduate Medical Education Committee and a member of the Medical Board.


Dario Kunar, MD, FACS

Dr. Kunar, of Ear, Nose and Throat Associates at GBMC, received his undergraduate degree at Columbia University. Following his medical degree from The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Dr. Kunar completed an internship in general surgery and his residency in otolaryngology - head and neck surgery at The Johns Hopkins Hospital. Dr. Kunar has been the recipient of numerous scholarships and research awards. His publications include a chapter on preoperative evaluation of patients in otolaryngology-head and neck surgery. His areas of interest include laryngology, head and neck oncology, pediatric otolaryngology, treatment of swallowing disorders and diseases of the ear and cochlear implantation.


Patrick Ha, MD, FACS

Dr. Ha, of Johns Hopkins Head & Neck Surgery at GBMC, received his undergraduate degree at Harvard College, his medical degree from The Johns Hopkins University and completed both his residency and additional Head and Neck Oncologic Surgery training at The Johns Hopkins Hospital. He is a board-certified otolaryngologist, an Associate Professor at The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and a fellow of the American College of Surgeons. Dr. Ha is actively involved in National Institutes of Health-funded research in the basic mechanisms of salivary gland cancers. He also has a special interest in endoscopic laser techniques for organ-sparing surgeries.

Joel Turner, MD

Dr. Turner, of Finney Trimble Surgical Associates, received his medical degree from the University of Maryland School of Medicine and completed his residency in general surgery at the University of Maryland Hospital. He obtained further training in advanced laparoscopic procedures during his fellowship, also at the University of Maryland Hospital. Dr. Turner specializes in endocrine and advanced laparoscopic procedures as well as general surgery. He has extensive experience in endocrine surgery (thyroidectomy, parathyroidectomy, laparoscopic adrenalectomy) having performed more than 1,700 endocrine cases while at GBMC.

Dr. Turner has been a member of the GBMC community since 1999. He is currently the Vice Chairman of the Department of Surgery as well as the Chief of Minimally Invasive Surgery at GBMC. Dr. Turner is also a Diplomat of the American Board of Surgery and an active member in the American College of Surgeons and the Society of American Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Surgeons.
