The Volunteer Auxiliary is a group of nearly 900 volunteers associated with Gilchrist Hospice Care and the hospital. The Volunteer Auxiliary contributes approximately 100,000 service hours annually with a monetary value based on the Independent Sector of $1.5 million.
Service volunteers provide a wide variety of services including assistance to patient care areas in wheelchair transport of patients, bed making, patient visiting, and communication with waiting families. Volunteers also provide office support and retail services. The focus of service support provided by the Volunteer Auxiliary is toward fund-raising and public service functions.
The Volunteer Auxiliary raises $500,000 annually through GBMC's semi-annual Nearly New sale; The Corner Shop - GBMC's premier gift shop; a variety of Vendor Sales such as jewelry, books, cookware, and uniform sales; and commissions received via established contracts with outside vendors.
The Volunteer Auxiliary allocates funds back to the organization at-large. Recent gifts include a $4 million pledge to the Capital Campaign, $5,000 towards the first cochlear implant performed at GBMC, and $7,000 towards a blanket warmer for the recovery room of the general operating room.
A winning combination of the Volunteer Auxiliary's value of service hours and funds raised each year provides a significant contribution of $2 million to the GBMC organization annually!
