Family Waiting Volunteer

In support to the hospital, the family waiting volunteer acts as a liaison between the patient's family/significant other and hospital personnel to keep the family informed of schedule and location changes, and provide opportunity when appropriate for the family to visit the patient.  Also acts as host providing families with coffee, directions, and other information needed during their wait.

  • Responsibilities: 

- Coordinate with Post Anesthetic Care Unit (PACU) volunteers to  keep patient families and/or significant others informed of changes in patient schedule and location.
- Provide room and phone numbers to the family/significant others, as appropriate.
- Coordinate with PACU volunteers and/or charge nurse appropriate visits between patients and family/significant others.
- Handle phone responsibilities in accordance with policies and procedures regarding confidentiality and release of patient information.
- Make coffee, keep refreshment area stocked, neat and clean. Offer coffee to those waiting.
- Provide directions and other information as needed during a family/significant other’s wait.

This position description briefly describes this role's responsibilities. Other duties may be assigned as determined to support the hospital.  All volunteers are required to (a) notify designated staff member of any absences; (b) sign in and out when reporting to and leaving their volunteer assignment; (c) conform to established dress code including wearing hospital-issued name badge; (d) maintain confidentiality; and (e) adhere to annual compliance requirements as set forth by GBMC and its regulatory agency.
