Comprehensive Evaluation

Once an appointment is made you will be sent a comprehensive medical history and voiding diary to complete. The voiding diary is critical. It is easy to complete -- all you do is write down the times and amounts you drink and void and any activity associated with leakage.

During the initial consultation a full medical and surgical history will be reviewed. The doctor will do an exam similar to a routine gyn exam with a couple of extra steps if applicable. The strength and reflexes in the legs will be checked initially. After the pelvic exam it is likely that a catheter will be passed to ensure that you empty your bladder completely. A cotton swab will then be placed in the urethra to measure the movement of the tissues. This exam is usually not painful. If you have prolapse you may be asked to stand and be examined.

On completion of the exam the doctor will sit down with you in a separate consultation room and discuss the need for any further testing (urodynamic or cystoscopy) and review all the various treatment options available.
