There are two infant care areas at GBMC, both on the 2nd floor. Ordinarily, newborns are cared for in their mother's room or in the Newborn Nursery, which is located adjacent to the rooms of obstetrical patients. The Nursery contains 60 beds. The Transitional Nursery beds are located in the Intermediate Care Nursery (IMC) or Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). The Transitional Area provides an environment designed to facilitate transition from intrauterine to extrauterine life. It is reserved for those infants who have shown some difficulty in this process and it is utilized for a maximum of six hours. By the end of this time the infant may return to the Newborn Nursery or the mother's room, or may require admission to the Intermediate Care Nursery orNeonatal Intensive Care Unit. Back |
