Earlier this year, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) expressed concern regarding antibiotic resistance, which is one of the world’s most urgent threats to health. In the U.S. alone, at least two million people annually get an infection that is resistant to antibiotics, leading to 23,000 deaths, according to the CDC. The more an antibiotic is used, the greater the chance that bacteria will develop resistance to it, and medical experts are concerned that antibiotics are being overprescribed and used inappropriately. Naaseha F. Rizvi, Pharm.D., Lead Antimicrobial Stewardship Pharmacist at GBMC, explains what “Super Bugs” are and what needs to be done to reduce the rate of antibiotic resistance.
