Dr. Akman earned his medical degree from the University of Maryland at Baltimore and completed his residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at GBMC. In 1990, he was one of the first gynecological surgeons to perform a laparoscopic hysterectomy. Following graduation from residency, he became involved in resident training and teaching advanced laparoscopic techniques to surgeons. He has been practicing medicine for over 20 years and has served on many GBMC committees including the Medical Board and a 10-year term on the Quality Assurance committee. In addition to working in an active practice, he is an instructor to the OB-GYN residents of The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, focusing on patient-centered approaches to treatment. Dr. Akman is certified by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology.
