President and CEO Discusses COVID-19 for WBAL TownHall

October 6, 2020
John B. Chessare, GBMC’s President and CEO talked with WBAL NewsRadio about how Maryland is handling the COVID-19 pandemic, what GBMC is doing to prepare for a second wave of COVID-19, and his recent discussion with Dr. Anthony Fauci.

“At GBMC, we’re well prepared if there’s a second wave of COVID-19 infections,” Dr. Chessare explained. “We’ve never let our guard down and continue to do what we’ve been doing since March —using proper personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times, following handwashing and physical distancing guideline and encouraging our patients to do the same. The general public in Maryland is doing the right thing and the overall positivity rate is down.”

Dr. Chessare also said that people appear to be more comfortable coming to their doctor’s office and the hospital for care. Elective surgeries have returned to near the level they were before the pandemic struck this past spring.

From his discussion with Dr. Fauci, Dr. Chessare shared that there’s hope of a less severe flu season this fall if the Northern Hemisphere follows the trend happening in the Southern Hemisphere were there very few cases of influenza over the past few months. That’s good news, especially if the U.S. experiences a second wave of COVID-19 that coincides with flu season. He also talked with Dr. Fauci about when a safe, effective COVID-19 vaccine will be available and who the first people to receive the vaccine will likely be.
