Spiritual Support FAQ
What is a chaplain?
A chaplain is someone who is available for spiritual support or guidance regardless of religious affiliation. This role differs from that of a congregational leader, who is an expert in a certain religious tradition. Chaplains can also connect patients, families and GBMC staff members with local congregations for continued support.
Why am I asked questions about my religious background as part of my admission process?
As part of your admission process, you will be asked three questions:
1) Do you belong to a religious tradition?
2) Do you belong to a congregation?
3) Would you like us to contact your congregation/leader? (In keeping with our compliance to HIPAA regulations, we will not contact others of your hospitalization without your specific permission.)
We ask these questions as soon as you are admitted to learn more about you in an effort to support your spiritual needs to the best of our ability, as quickly as possible. We understand that you are going through a difficult and stressful time, and as a convenience, we will gladly contact your congregation to inform them of your hospitalization.
What if I am unable to get to the Chapel for special services?
Many of our services or events, including Catholic and Protestant communion, are broadcast to each patient's room on the Spiritual Channel (Channel 3 on every TV). As always, a visit with your congregational leader can also be arranged at your request.
How can I arrange a special service in the chapel?
Certain ceremonies, such as baptisms, Jewish Bris and services of remembrance may be arranged and held in the Chapel. To make such arrangements, call or e-mail Kitty Allen, Administrative Assistant, at 443-849-2054 or email@example.com. Seasonal celebrations are also celebrated, such as the Christian remembrance of Ash Wednesday at the beginning of Lent and the Jewish Seder at Passover.
