GBMC is known throughout the community as “the baby hospital,” and was named one of America’s Best Maternity Hospitals in 2022 by Newsweek. Parents who spend time in the GBMC Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) with their newborns understand the importance of a skilled and compassionate medical care team, specifically the care provided by the NICU nurses.

Benjamin (Ben) Goodrich, RN, has been a nurse in the GBMC NICU for more than three years. Ben shared that one of the most rewarding parts of his work is “getting to make a difference in the lives of our patients, the lives of their families, and the lives of those they will impact in the future.”

Ben also shared he and his fellow nurses spend most of their time with “eyes on the patients” and because of that, are a pivotal part of the medical care team. Some newborns can have a particularly long stay in the NICU, and the nurses often develop relationships with their patients and families. GBMC NICU nurses spend extra time comforting parents and reading to patients to improve brain development.

In addition to caring for their tiny patients, the nurses work closely with parents to prepare them to care for their infants after discharge. They help with car seat testing, hearing screenings, and more to make sure babies have the best chance at success after they leave GBMC.

Nurses like Ben are an important part of the NICU care team and of the GBMC HealthCare System overall. It is important to continue to support our nurses, their work, and their continued learning. By making a gift to GBMC nursing, you can help make our nurses feel appreciated, pursue further education and training, and allow GBMC to attract and retain the best nurses, like Ben.
