The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) recognized GBMC with a Five-Star Overall Hospital Quality Rating, the highest designation for overall hospital performance. Only 765 hospitals in the country received this designation, and GBMC is among just seven in Maryland.

The CMS Five-Star Overall Hospital Quality Rating is one of the most trusted and comprehensive measures of hospital performance in the United States. Administered by CMS, the federal agency that oversees Medicare and Medicaid, the rating is designed to help patients and families make informed decisions about their care.

A CMS five-star rating is built on performance across multiple areas, including outcomes, patient experience, safety, and quality of care, reflecting not just what happens during a hospital stay, but how well a hospital consistently delivers on every part of the patient experience.

This designation draws on combined data from three Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) surveys of patients' firsthand hospital experiences and represents the hospitals patients themselves would recommend to family and friends.

Fewer than 15% of hospitals in the country receive a five-star overall rating, making this a meaningful differentiator in a crowded healthcare landscape. For patients in the Baltimore region, it shows care is available close to home and meets a nationally recognized standard of excellence.

“This recognition reflects the extraordinary commitment of our physicians, nurses, team members, and leaders who work every day to improve quality, strengthen patient safety, and deliver exceptional care to the communities we serve,” Samantha Crandall, PhD, RN, CPHQ, CPPS, Senior Vice President of Quality and Patient Safety for GBMC HealthCare, said. “This milestone represents the power of focused teamwork, accountability, and continuous improvement.”

Achieving a five-star rating is a product of sustained, organization-wide focus on doing better for patients every day. GBMC remains committed to building on this recognition, continuing to raise the bar for the patients and communities it serves throughout the greater Baltimore region.
