As we age, our skin becomes thinner and more porous, which means wounds can happen more often and take longer to heal. Wounds can develop from falls and scrapes or even as a result of some medications. The important thing to remember is not to wait.

According to Jennifer A. Heller, MD, RPVI, Medical Director, Wound Center at GBMC, if a wound looks like it’s getting bigger, worse, or hasn’t healed after about a week, it might be time to come in and see a specialist. Caregivers should keep an eye on elder loved ones and bring them in to see Dr. Heller or her team if a wound is concerning.

The Wound Center at GBMC takes a multidisciplinary and comprehensive approach to wound care. Patients have access to experts in vascular surgery, podiatry, infectious disease, and plastic surgery, as well as a highly experienced nursing team.
