Preparing for a baby comes with endless advice, checklists, and questions. In this episode of Practical Parenting, we walk expectant parents and their support system through some of the biggest decisions they'll make before delivery, what to expect during the hospital stay, and how to navigate those first days at home with confidence and grace.

One of Dr. Nguyen's first recommendations is to choose a pediatrician based on the relationship, not simply a list of answers. During prenatal visits, she encourages parents to determine whether they trust the provider, feel comfortable asking questions, and share similar parenting philosophies.

"It's really about relationship, communication style," she explained, noting that not every pediatrician is the right fit for every family.

There is a lot of care for newborns starting during the hospital stay. Newborns typically receive a physical examination, a hepatitis B vaccine, a vitamin K injection, erythromycin eye ointment, and bilirubin screening before going home. Dr. Nguyen explains the purpose behind each intervention and why they are important parts of newborn care.

For families whose babies require care in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), Dr. Nguyen offers reassurance that a NICU stay does not always mean something is seriously wrong. Premature babies often require additional respiratory support because their lungs are still developing, while some babies born close to term may spend several days in the NICU for temporary breathing support or observation. She explains what families can expect and emphasizes how parents can remain an important part of their baby's care throughout the experience.

Beyond the medical information, much of the conversation focuses on supporting parents themselves. Dr. Nguyen encourages families to accept help from friends and relatives, whether that means bringing meals, doing laundry, or helping around the house. She also reminds parents that fathers can experience postpartum depression and deserve support as they adjust to life with a newborn.

Perhaps the most memorable message of the episode is one of slowing down. Dr. Nguyen encourages parents to put aside the pressure to document every feeding or diaper change once their baby is thriving. Instead, she invites them to simply be present.

"Take a moment, breathe. Watch your baby sleep. Make eye contact with your baby. That's what's going to help soothe your nerves and your baby's nerves," she said.

Babies don't follow a plan. Flexibility is one of the most valuable skills parents can develop. Every child is different, every family finds its own rhythm, and almost everything is repairable. Above all, Dr. Nguyen encourages parents to be kind to themselves, give grace to those around them, and enjoy the remarkable experience of welcoming a new baby into the world.
