Pharmacy Residency Program at GBMC

Residency Requirements:

Pharmacists completing the GBMC PGY1 pharmacy residency will be able to interact effectively with health care teams in various inpatient and outpatient clinical settings to manage patients’ medication therapy.

Required learning experiences will include 9 required block rotations, 2 elective block rotations, and 5 required longitudinal rotations. Residents will also be precepting students, staffing, and completing research projects/presentations during the residency year.

Clinical and Operational

  • Inpatient staffing:
    • Every third weekend (8 hours/shift) – minimum requirement: 24 weekend shifts/year
    • One evening per week (4 hours/shift)
    • One major holiday and one minor holiday

Research

  • 5 days will be given for research/project time throughout the residency year
  • Include 1 week meeting attendance and poster presentation at ASHP MidYear

Teaching

  • Teaching hours required by University of Maryland School of Pharmacy: 6 hours (3 hours per semester)
  • Teaching certificate is optional via University of Maryland School of Pharmacy
  • Precepting pharmacy students

Specialty and Ambulatory Pharmacy Services

  • Specialty and Outpatient pharmacy: 5 months in the Fall (every other Friday)
  • Anticoagulation clinic: 5 months in the Spring (every other Friday)

10 months

Elective Rotations: each PGY-1 resident may complete a maximum of two elective rotations during the residency year and one can be an off-site rotation – subjective to availability

Qualifications:

  • Resident candidate must be a graduate of an ACPE accredited college of pharmacy with a Doctor of Pharmacy degree (or one in the process of pursuing accreditation) or have a Foreign Pharmacy Graduate Examination Committee (FPGEC) certificate from the NABP.
  • Minimum GPA of 3.0 on the standardized GPA scale or a “Pass” grade on each class and rotation if from a “Pass/Fail” program
  • Active Maryland Pharmacy licensure OR license should be obtained no later than 90 days from the start date of the position.
  • Enrolled with the National Matching Services’ Resident Matching Program and adhere to the rules of the matching process.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States.
