Providing personalized diabetes self-management training, nutrition education, and emotional support to help people achieve optimal health
The Geckle Diabetes and Nutrition Center at GBMC offers a comprehensive approach to diabetes education and treatment for all types of diabetes, including type 1, type 2, and gestational. Pediatric as well as adult patients may be referred to the Center. The diabetes education team consists of Registered Dietitians and Registered Nurses, and all are Certified Diabetes Educators. People with diabetes can learn about diabetes self-management, including self-blood glucose monitoring, insulin pump therapy, the use of continuous glucose sensors, and other diabetes tools to help manage their diabetes. Diabetes nutrition and meal planning, physical activity, and the use of diabetes medications, as needed, are some of the topics discussed and presented at the Center. Our program also extends out to the various GBMC Primary Care offices.
The Center is recognized by the American Diabetes Association (ADA) as meeting the ADA National Standards for Diabetes Self-Management Education. People with diabetes receive a thorough assessment of their medical condition and the team provides individual or type 2 diabetes group education classes to help the person achieve and maintain better diabetes control. With diabetes self-management skills and improved blood glucose (sugar) levels, people with diabetes can reduce the risk of complications and significantly improve the quality of their lives.
