"Three months ago, the World Health Organization was alerted to flu-like cases in Wuhan, China (7,500 miles from Baltimore). Since then, the virus has been detected in 150 locations globally and is very much among us. With good reason, our community is stressed, anxious and fearful. The spread of SARS-CoV-2 in the United States has been exponential. Without success of public health measures, 80 percent of Americans could become infected and millions could die. Awareness of this has shaken our economic, social and cultural systems and the bedrocks on which we stand. Truly, this is an unprecedented time. This time calls for a focus on that which is nobler – generosity, compassion, thoughtfulness, humanity, concern for the welfare of others. It calls for a return to values.”

This was the opening statement GBMC’s newest leader -- Chair of the Department of Medicine, Melvin Blanchard, MD (pictured above) -- made in his first internal department newsletter. It is certainly an unprecedented time for the world and a challenging time to be in a critical leadership role. But Dr. Blanchard’s words serve as a reminder to everyone that we can use this opportunity of anxiety and fear to band together and help each other.

Dr. Blanchard’s message went on to inspire physicians at GBMC, reminding them of why they chose this profession, and the obligation they have in serving patients, no matter the culture or clinical environment. He called for physicians to stay informed and enthusiastic in serving patients, and to lead with integrity and honesty. He also called for physicians to stay calm and practice gratitude for their own mental health and to serve as examples for others.

Physicians are on the frontlines of this crisis. They chose this profession, but they are also humans. We want pay homage to those individuals who dedicate their lives to public health, who step up and lead the charge when necessary.

Thank you to all our doctors for keeping us healthy and safe.
