Understanding Endometriosis and Finding Relief
March 25, 2026
March is Endometriosis Awareness Month, a time to discuss a condition that affects 1 in 10 women.
Despite its prevalence, endometriosis remains one of the most misunderstood conditions in women’s health. Because severe pelvic pain is often dismissed as "just a painful period," patients wait an average of 7 to 10 years from the onset of symptoms to receiving an accurate diagnosis. At GBMC, we believe you shouldn't have to wait a decade for answers.
What is Endometriosis?
Endometriosis occurs when tissue similar to the lining of the uterus (the endometrium) grows outside the uterus. This misplaced tissue thickens, breaks down, and bleeds as it would during a menstrual cycle. This then leads to inflammation, scar tissue, and significant pain.
- Common symptoms include:
- Chronic pelvic pain
- Debilitating periods
- Infertility or difficulty conceiving
- Pain during or after intercourse
A Path to Diagnosis
Diagnosing endometriosis can be complex. While a definitive diagnosis often requires a surgical procedure (laparoscopy), our team is committed to a proactive approach. We don't believe patients should "just bear it."
“Painful periods should not be seen as normal cramping that women have to endure. It is not normal to be missing school or work because of painful periods,” says GBMC minimally invasive gynecologic surgeon Dr. Elissa Trieu. “Patients deserve a full work-up and a team that listens.”
Our Approach to Care
Because endometriosis affects every person differently, care at GBMC is never "one size fits all." We utilize a multidisciplinary approach to ensure we are treating the whole person, not just the symptoms.
“Our goal is to meet patients exactly where they are,” explains Dr. Christine Helou, one of GBMC’s minimally invasive gynecologic surgeons. “Whether that means discussing surgical options or trialing medical management, we work as partners to ensure your treatment aligns with your lifestyle and your future.”
- Medical Management: There are numerous medical treatments to manage symptoms and improve quality of life immediately.
- Surgical Expertise: When necessary, our surgeons use minimally invasive techniques for diagnosis and treatment.
- Individualized Planning: Every treatment plan is tailored to the patient’s specific symptoms, lifestyle, and future fertility goals.
Reclaiming Your Life
Our ultimate goal is simple: early intervention and personalized care to get you back to living the life you want. If your periods are interfering with your daily life, it is time to speak up. We are here to listen, to validate, and to help you heal.
