Practical, compassionate guidance from GBMC clinicians for every stage of life.
In 2026, a new tax benefit will created an exciting opportunity for charitable individuals and families to support GBMC HealthCare while potentially reducing their tax liability. The new above-the-line charitable deduction recognizes and rewards generosity among non-itemizing taxpayers.
Under this provision, eligible taxpayers who do not itemize deductions may be able to deduct up to $1,000 in qualifying charitable cash contributions. Married couples filing jointly may be eligible to deduct up to $2,000. This deduction is available even for those who claim the standard deduction, allowing more donors to benefit from their charitable support.
This presents a meaningful opportunity to make a gift directly to GBMC HealthCare and potentially receive a tax benefit in return. Every contribution helps support GBMC's mission of providing compassionate, high-quality care and improving the health and well-being of the communities we serve.
To qualify for the deduction, gifts must meet certain requirements. First, the donation must consist of qualified cash contributions made to a recognized 501(c)(3) charitable organization, like GBMC. Eligible gifts generally include donations made by cash, check, or credit card.
Second, the recipient must be a qualified public charity. It is important for donors to understand that contributions to Donor-Advised Funds (DAFs), supporting organizations, and private nonoperating foundations are specifically excluded from eligibility for this non-itemizer deduction. Therefore, donors wishing to take advantage of this opportunity should consider making their gifts directly to GBMC HealthCare rather than routing them through a DAF or other excluded charitable vehicle.
A gift to GBMC is more than a charitable contribution. It is an investment in patient care, innovative programs, community health initiatives, medical education, and the resources necessary to continue delivering outstanding healthcare close to home. Whether supporting a specific program or making an unrestricted gift, donors help ensure that GBMC can continue meeting the evolving needs of patients and families throughout the region.
As you consider your charitable giving plans for 2026, we encourage you to explore how a direct gift to GBMC may provide a meaningful difference. At the same time, tax laws can be complex, and eligibility for deductions depends on individual circumstances. Donors should consult with their tax advisers or financial professionals regarding their specific situation and the applicability of this deduction to their personal tax planning.
