Practical, compassionate guidance from GBMC clinicians for every stage of life.
We are saddened by the passing of longtime GBMC physician and oncologist, Dr. Marshall Andrew Levine, who died on April 6, 2026, at the age of 81. A nationally recognized expert in head and neck malignancies, Dr. Levine was a trusted physician, mentor, and friend whose impact is felt deeply by his colleagues and patients.
Dr. Levine cared for the Baltimore community for more than 40 years, providing exceptional, compassionate cancer care and helping shape GBMC’s cancer program through his leadership, innovation, and dedication.
He was a pioneer in the treatment of head and neck cancers and instrumental in establishing the early, excellent reputation of what is now GBMC’s Milton J. Dance, Jr. Head & Neck Center. He introduced new treatments for head and neck and esophageal cancers that emphasized organ preservation. Along with treating his patients, Dr. Levine was dedicated to cancer research and contributed to improvements in the standard of care. He was appointed to the National Cancer Institute’s Steering Committee for Head and Neck Malignancies.
Among the innovations Dr. Levine brought to cancer care in the region is the multidisciplinary approach to care that is a hallmark of the Sandra & Malcolm Berman Cancer Institute today. He instituted regular gatherings of clinicians from across the oncology program that continue as the Berman Cancer Institute’s Tumor Board meetings, at which everyone in a position to contribute to a successful treatment plan is consulted, particularly in complex cases.
Dr. Marshall and Sarellen Levine were married for 50 years. He was an avid reader, cellist, and supporter and board member of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra. His family, friends, and colleagues loved him, as did his patients.
We extend our heartfelt condolences to Sarellen, their family and loved ones, and all who were fortunate to know Dr. Levine. His keen intellect, kindness, and good humor will be remembered in the hearts of all who knew him.
