Sonny Goel, MD: Bringing Vision and Gratitude into Focus
March 4, 2026
For Sonny Goel, MD, vision has always been more than the ability to see clearly; it is independence, confidence, and connection. Those values reflect not only the work he does each day as a leading ophthalmologist in Baltimore County but also his decision to support GBMC’s plan to relocate the Department of Ophthalmology to the second floor of the Founders Building, formerly PPW, creating a new patient-centered space.
“GBMC shaped who I am as a physician,” Dr. Goel says. “It’s where I trained, where I learned to care for patients as individuals, and where I still see the difference compassionate medicine can make.”
Thanks to gifts like his, the revitalized The Presbyterian Eye, Ear and Throat Charity Hospital Department of Ophthalmology, led by Dr. Mary Louise Collins, The Wilkinson-Welch-Hoover Endowed Chair, will feature expanded exam and treatment space, advanced surgical equipment, and improved accessibility for children, seniors, and patients with low vision.
Lifelong Dedication to Clear Vision
Raised in Cherry Hill, New Jersey, Dr. Goel knew from an early age that medicine was his calling. His parents encouraged that passion. Even before high school, he knew he wanted to help others see the world more clearly.
Dr. Goel completed an accelerated 6-year BA-MD program from Lehigh University and earned his Medical Degree from the Medical College of Pennsylvania. Following medical school, he completed an internship at the Hospital of the Medical College of Pennsylvania. Dr. Goel trained alongside his brother, Ravi D. Goel, MD, sharing both a professional journey and a family bond. Both completed their ophthalmology residencies at GBMC. Dr. Goel noted with pride that he was in the first resident class to be matched under Dr. Charles “Pat” Wilkinson, then the new Chairman of Ophthalmology. Dr. Wilkinson became his mentor, recognized his surgical skill, and encouraged him to pursue a career in LASIK. “Pat told me to trust my abilities and to do good work,” Dr. Goel recalls. “That advice has guided me ever since.”
In 2019, Dr. Goel founded Goel Vision, now one of the area’s premier LASIK providers, with offices in Towson and Columbia. His practice, recognized for more than eight years as a Baltimore Top Doc, is built on a patient-first philosophy: taking the time to provide personalized, technology-driven care. “Every patient deserves high-quality, safe, and compassionate treatment,” he says.
Dr. Goel often welcomes residents to observe and learn at Goel Vision. In 2027 he will serve as Director of Leadership Development for the American Academy of Ophthalmology. His forward-thinking approach and dedication to education ensure that patients benefit from the latest advances, including laser-assisted cataract surgery and innovative diagnostic technology.
While he cherishes his profession, family is his foundation. He and his wife of 27 years, Swati Jain Goel, MD, a Pediatric Hospitalist, have raised three children who share their parents’ drive and compassion. Their eldest daughter Krisana is practicing law in Manhattan; their middle son Shaan, a UCLA graduate, is preparing for law school; and their youngest Dilan, a high-school senior, plans to study finance.
Looking to the Future
For Dr. Goel, GBMC’s Department of Ophthalmology represents the best of academic medicine and patient-centered care - a place where teaching, innovation, and access to advanced diagnostics come together to restore and protect vision. His gift helps ensure the next generation of physicians will learn from leaders in the field and deliver comprehensive eye care that truly changes lives, just as he did.
Dr. Goel’s gift reflects not just a donation, but a legacy of clarity commitment, bringing GBMC’s mission of healing and community into even sharper focus.
