More Than You Might Think: Clinical Trials at GBMC
March 4, 2026Clinical trials have been part of GBMC for years — yet many clinicians are surprised to learn just how extensive the program has become.
“We still hear, ‘Wait, we have a research program?’” said Laura Morse Cucci, PhD, BSN, RN, Research Nurse Manager. “And the answer is yes — and we’ve been doing this for a long time.”
GBMC’s clinical trials program is best known for its oncology research, where studies often offer patients access to emerging therapies not yet widely available. But the program’s scope continues to expand, supporting research across multiple departments and collaborating closely with residents and attending physicians.
“Our goal has always been to serve as a research resource for the entire hospital,” Laura said. “Not just oncology, but anywhere research can improve care.”
In addition to industry-sponsored trials, the team supports investigator-initiated studies, retrospective research, and resident-led projects — all critical components of medical education and fellowship preparation.
“For residents, having research experience can be the difference in securing a fellowship,” Laura explained. “Being able to do that at a community hospital is a real differentiator.”
The clinical research team manages regulatory submissions, data collection, and trial coordination, allowing physicians to focus on patient care and scientific inquiry.
“Many clinicians want to do research but don’t know where to start,” Laura said. “That’s where we come in — we help guide the process from idea to implementation.”
Perhaps most importantly, clinical trials give GBMC patients access to care that might otherwise require travel to distant academic centers.
“Our patients trust us,” Laura said. “Being able to offer advanced research here reinforces that trust and elevates the care we provide.”
Medical staff are encouraged to explore current trials, refer appropriate patients, and connect with the research team to learn more about how clinical trials can support both patient care and professional development.
