New Hope for Arthritis Pain Relief
November 20, 2025
If you’re living with arthritis pain that hasn’t improved with medications, injections, or physical therapy, there’s another option to consider. GBMC’s Department of Radiation Oncology offers low-dose radiation therapy (LDRT)— a gentle, non-invasive treatment designed to relieve arthritis pain and improve mobility.
Although LDRT is delivered by GBMC’s radiation oncology experts, it is not a cancer treatment. Instead, it uses very small, carefully controlled doses of radiation to reduce inflammation in affected joints. The treatment is painless, safe, and has minimal to no side effects.
Who Can Benefit
LDRT is available to adults age 60 and older who have moderate arthritis and haven’t found enough relief from other treatments such as:
• Physical therapy
• Medications
• Cortisone or steroid injections
Patients should already be under the care of a primary care or orthopedic provider before being referred to Radiation Oncology for evaluation.
What To Expect
• Six short treatments given every other day for two weeks
• No downtime—you can go about your normal activities
• Relief that may last 6 to 12 months
• Covered by Medicare and most insurance plans
Low-dose radiation therapy doesn’t eliminate the need for joint replacement surgery, but it may help delay surgery or reduce pain long enough for you to stay active and independent longer.
GBMC is proud to offer this evidence-based treatment as part of our ongoing commitment to bringing comprehensive and compassionate care to our community.
