Advancing Health Through Excellence in Care, Education, and Improvement

At every stage of life, GBMC is committed to providing the care that we would want for our loved ones. The Department of Medicine advances that mission by delivering the highest quality care in the most efficient manner and teaching future physicians to do the same.

Our department is home to 12 outstanding clinical divisions, an Internal Medicine Residency Program, and a peer-reviewed medical journal (JCHIMP). Together, these programs support our commitment to clinical excellence, medical education, scholarship, and continuous improvement.

As our contribution to advancing medical care in the United States, we focus on developing physicians who excel at both caring for patients and improving the systems in which that care is delivered. We conduct research through a systematic approach. Improving quality of care, patient safety, and achieving operational excellence are integral to our educational mission. We believe that exceptional outcomes require both excellent clinicians and well-designed healthcare systems, because even the best physician cannot consistently deliver the care patients deserve within a flawed system. That is why we train our residents to think beyond the bedside.

Our faculty train our residents not only how to care for individual patients, but also how to improve patient outcomes, identify waste, and lead meaningful change. Through rigorous training in quality improvement and patient safety, we prepare physicians to become more than excellent clinicians. We prepare them to become leaders who can transform healthcare – one patient and one system at a time.

Whether caring for patients, educating learners, publishing scholarly work, or transforming healthcare delivery, we are united by a common purpose: To provide the highest quality care in the most efficient manner and teaching future physicians to do the same.
